Speculative Fact #305: Outer Space Treaty

In the 1960s, a treaty which formed the basis of internationally recognized “space laws” was created.
The Space Treaty was heavily influenced by the cultural and political climate of the sixties and the space race. It was drafted at a time, during the height of the Cold War, when space represented the penultimate high ground.
            The Space Laws ensured that no nation would attempt to claim any body in space (like the Moon) for nefarious purposes - recognizing that any advanced party in that theater would immediately dominate all others. Aspiring to the angels of our batter natures, the treaty urges us to use space together for peaceful endeavors that would hopefully benefit all of humanity.
            The 21st century might see not only nations going into space but also private companies and organizations as well. Going beyond, our Space Treaty and Space Laws might be upheld and expanded upon. Maybe they gradually lose relevance and are not enforced.
