Of all the celestial bodies beyond the Earth, the lion's share of our collective attention has been on Mars. Specifically, we want to live there; our break glass in case of emergency settlement if things get to dicey on Earth. Anything could happen to send the future into a dystopian death spiral(and so many to chose from) . But as cool as teraforming sounds, Mars is not our only option.
The linked article details the pros and cons of a Mars mission. For those hard science fiction freaks out there, the cons are pretty significant, not least of which being the time it would take to make living there feel like something other than a planet wide Hades.  But this could be a list of the plot problems your characters overcome.
Then there are the alternatives to Mars (maybe a great story title?). They would also lend themselves to intense setting and difficult questions for humanity. But not to worry, your characters have the answers...or not. Yet, another dystopian perspective.
