Speculative Fact #308: Yes, Let's Give Rich People Another Reason to do Something Horrible

     The fountain of youth.
Immortality. It is a lovely dream. A Utopian dream. The concept of forever and ever, never having to face the possibility of death by decay.  Scientists from three parallel research projects have found that you can inject protein GDF11 from the blood of young mice into old mice and get startling results. Everything improves: Muscle fibers, grip, the circulatory system, stamina, overall cell health, reversed neurodegeneration, and memory.

Question 1:  How much would it cost?
Answer 1: Unknown, but it is a safe bet that there will be quite a few zeroes on the price tag.

Question 2: Who will have to pay?

Answer: Well, if we're talking about dollars, then the answer is obvious. But, if the currency is blood, then things get more complicated. It is not like they will be using mouse blood on humans.

Certainly if brought to market, there could be volunteer programs. Blood could be taken from organ donors. But there's a black market for everything and regulations from country to country differ drastically (Russia, I'm looking at you!).

Now, for a truly nightmare scenario...

"As described in the Nature Medicine paper, Villeda and his colleagues physically connected the circulatory systems of old mice to young mice via surgery that stitched their abdominal cavities together. " -Jennifer Frazier, National Geographic
Now imagine that with people. The fountain of youth spouts blood.
