For one species of beetle, nursing mothers ain’t having any. Nicrophorus vespilloides releases a chemical that diminishes the male’s urge to breed. With the (down boy) compulsion reduced, it allows for more focused maternal care and avoids potential conflicts between the parents.
This isn’t just an interesting nature fact, this could be used in your story. What if future societies had some kind of anti-pheromone? Instead of everybody trying to “get busy,” what if libido decreasing drugs were used to keep our animal urges in check? Could it liberate women? Help reduce the world human population? Help us stay focused in the workplace? Let’s explore this in our writing and see where it takes us.
