Speculative Fact # 238: Naval Dolphin Program

2/9/2015

Picture
The U.S. Navy trained teams of marine mammals (dolphins and sea lions notably) in missions like ship escort, sea mine clearance, and the recovery of equipment.

After becoming declassified in the 1990’s the U.S. Navy's Marine Mammal Program (NMMP) was heavily criticized. Though the program is soon scheduled to be cancelled a number of controversies and conspiracies surround it. For example: some have hypothesized that the militarized mammals have been trained to kill human divers.

Your story could be an alternate reality military Science-fiction mash-up. While military dolphins have already been used in some SF stories they are certainly not a common staple. Human/dolphin team could be just the type of unit to liven up your tale and earn you points for uniqueness.
