Speculative Fact #146: Drone Air Delivery

    The usage of unmanned “drone” aerial vehicles greatly increased in the years following the invasion of Iraq. In 2008 the number of unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, outnumbered the number of manned aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force. 
    Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has a slightly different application in mind, air
package delivery. Bezos predicts that his vision will become reality in “four or five years,” with most of the delay resulting from issues of legality (I.e. FAA regulations).
    Science fiction writers are often accused of being horrible futurists.
When envisioning the future it may pay off to research recent and upcoming trends. This news opens up all kinds of question about drone usage. 
    Drone pizza delivery? Chinese? What if a drone crashes and kills someone? What if it needs maintenance? Will future sidewalks be thronged by drone repair techs? Will truck drivers have to look for a new job soon?
