Photons can get refracted by things like glass or water, and all of us can observe these affects with simple experiments.
Scientists have recently conducted experiments with graphene and found that they were able to get electrons to refract negatively; instead of scattering they focused to a point, inspiring them to achieve lens-like affects.
In the future this research could lead to the next generation of transistors, which could revolutionize electronics. New electron microscopes could advance medical research. Or perhaps such materials could be used in the radiation shielding of our interplanetary spacecraft. How will this newly discovered property be exploited in your story?
