Speculative Fact #163: Ancient Greek Flamethrower

The Battle of Delium (424 BCE), fought between the Greek Boeotians and Athenians climaxed with a siege. The curious thing is how the attacking Boeotians eventually defeated the Athenian defenders. The Greek historian Thucydides describes what sounds like…a flamethrower. Using the flame throwing siege weapon they chased away the fleeing Athenians, who were essentially hiding behind burning kindling.

Does your speculative fiction story take place in an ancient city? Is there a siege? Is one of your characters handy and inventive? A flamethrower might seem out of place but it’s more than plausible!
