Speculative Fact #207: The Babylon Gun

7/21/2014

Picture
In the late eighties/early nineties, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein commissioned the construction of a number of large ‘superguns.’
Named project Babylon, the original purpose behind the myriad designs are still unknown.  Theories have run the gamut from a long range artillery gun (for use against Iran or Israel) to a cost effective device capable of launching payloads into low Earth orbit.
Perhaps the characters in your alternate history story require a low tech means of getting an object into space. Or maybe some Napoleonic madman needs a doomsday weapon to terrorize an entire colonial era European continent.
