Speculative Fact #289: New Names for Exoplanets

1/18/2016

If you haven’t been keeping up, many exoplanets have been discovered using modern astronomy (over five hundred confirmed with many other possible candidates). So many have been discovered that the International Astronomical Union (which officially names planets) outsourced the task to the public via an international naming contest.
Some of the newly named worlds are very classical sounding (e.g. Arion in the 18 Delphini system and Hypatia in Iota Draconis). However we also have Sancho (Mu Arae), named after the character in Don Quixote and Poltergeist in PSR 1257+12.
Time to update your galactic navigational charts.
